Did Shooting A Gun In The Woods Cause Me Tinnitus?

Often times on my exploratory trips out in the wilderness with the wife and daughter we find ourselves either hunting or shooting guns for fun or practice. We have been doing this a very long as it is almost in our DNA being from North Carolina and all so firing a weapon is nothing new for any of us as we all have been doing it since we were little. Of course we all know that most guns are loud but what many of us do not realize and even me before I was educated is that the noise from a gun can easily cause an ear disorder such as Tinnitus. I unfortunately learned this hard way and found this great infographic that really helped me explore and understand the topic a bit more.

First I Learned That Guns Are…

Some of the most damaging to your hearing. In the infographic they say the noise level from a single .22 caliber rifle reaches 138db which is almost equivalent according to picture to that of a Jet plane takeoff. Its noted that guns, hunting and shooting are 1 of the 4 major causes of hearing and ear damage.

Then I Realized That Shooting Guns When I Was Younger May Have Lead To…

When my wife and I were younger and yes this was long time ago we used to hunt without ear buds or ear covers. I know this may have lead to me to experience some form of the ear disorder Tinnitus because after our trips the constant ringing or buzz in my ear would linger for months.

I think I got lucky…

While I do not think I had full blown Tinnitus because my conditions were not chronic, I do think starting to use more advanced ear protectors and being more cautious about what noises my ears are exposed to on the hunting trips has lead to much less hearing disruption in my normal everyday life.

What I Learned From My Inexperience…

Most importantly I learned the value of protecting your ears which is vital when trying to fight against the potential development of inner ear disorders. When Hunting or Shooting guns it is crucial to adequately protect your ears at all times. Even though I never experienced full blown Tinnitus I know this is something I want to avoid at all costs. I read somewhere that overall health and wellness in conjunction with active prevention can go along way towards warden off ear disorders such as Tinnitus. If you have interesting ear stories or lessons to share please do let me know! We as a community need to educate the world on the value of protecting your ears at all times.
